CARD SHARPS (after Caravaggio) ‘Card Sharps’ name and idea comes from artist Caravaggio, his 1594 Italian Baroque painting of the same name. Reinterpreted here, the picture won a 2nd place in the Strathmore 2023 Annual Open Art Competition, “Play”. Juror Zoma Wallace remarked: “I saw this piece during the jurying process, it instantly jumped out at me and became one of my favorite works of all those (some 900) submitted…..the perfect example of a ‘play’ …..by reimagining and updating a classic work. ……….The scene is smartly composed with no superfluous information. What’s more, Caravaggian lighting is spot-on, and so well handled in the medium of photography, in relation to the original painting. This work is truly a delight that never approaches caricature or kitsch. I love this piece!“

DOGS IN SYNC

The Poodle Rizzo and the Airedale Cookie hit it off immediately. No one expected the poodle, a service dog, to break free. But he led the way, running up and down the beach, in sync, like they were trained to do this. beautiful thing to see.

FLOCK OF POLLOCKS
Many see birds as the name suggests. A splatter of black, white and gray, its name also acknowledges the style of Jackson Pollock. The original photo image was separated into tonal layers, black, white, and gray. The layers were recomposited, but at different relative scales. The resultant image suffers destruction but the image resonates in avian character. A cacophony of sound and light instills a graphic image, and a flock appears – but the image of an individual bird is not to be found.
